Vitality T20 Blast 2021 – Tournament preview

As we discussed earlier, the T20 Blast will run from June to September, wherein 18 teams from three groups will play 122 match league matches, 4 quarterfinals, and 2 semi-finals before the grand finale. Look at the number of teams and matches; it’s the reason why T20 Blast is exciting and very popular among punters.

T20 Blas has three groups: North, South, and Central. Each of them has a separate number of teams. Two points will be rewarded for a win and one if the match remains a draw. Collecting more points is crucial in this tournament because the run rate is secondary.

Northern Group

Nottinghamshire Outlaws: Current champions

The Outlaws were on course to the finals in 2019 and suffered a loss of one run. But, that was history. In the last season, they defeated Surrey and won the title. Jake Ball was the highest wicket-taker with 19 killings under his belt.

The Outlaws some big hitters and star players in the squad. Harry Gurney and Alex Hales are the ones who can perform again. Alex was in top form in 2019, but we never saw much from him in 2020. Let’s hope he can fire again in the upcoming league.

Lancashire Lightning

The Lightning has only one title under their name, but they have won more games than other teams in the T20 Blast. We can say that the Lightning had a great run last season because they reached the semi-finals. However, the Outlaws defeated them.

Liam Livingstone, Jos Buttler, and Alex Davies are the three key players for Lancashire Lightning. We already saw how destructive Livingstone and Butler can be. But, Alex Davies is yet to come out of the shadows. This wicket-keeper batsman has a superb strike rate in T20 cricket. If he can find some big scores, then we can see better performance by the team.

Leicestershire Foxes

The Foxes performed like an ordinary contender in the last season. They are three times title winners, but couldn’t reach the semi-finals. We agree that the team got unlucky in the quarter-finals, where the match was a draw. But then, run rate is another unit that needs to be cleared.

Gareth Delany was performing well. Colin Ackermann is another in-form batsman for the foxes. If we talk based on the past performance of this team, they will be one of the favorites in the next seasons as well.

Durham Jets

Successful in the longer formats, but Durham Jets are yet to find the right tune for T20 Blasts matches. It’s true because they finished at the 4th position in T20 Blast 2020. Led by Ned Eckersley, Durham was unable to reach the semi-finals. Matty Potts was the only attraction that this team had. Let’s see what happens next year, because the Jets can fly well. They just need some more time to adjust in the shortest cricket of cricket.

Yorkshire Vikings

The Vikings are yet to win a title and we can understand why. They won only three matches out of ten. Their performance was similar in the year 2019. Still, given the high-quality players, this team can do well.

Joe Root tried his part in the last season, but he cannot do all the damage alone. Tom Kohler-Cadmore has the talent, but he lacks consistency. Apart from him, Will Fraine can try and improve his techniques to bring some numbers to the scorecard.

Derbyshire Falcons

Forget finals, Falcons were never able to reach the semi-finals. The team might want to overlook T20Blast 2020 because they won only 1 match out of 10. What could the possible results? Falcons finished, at last position on the points table.

Billy Godleman happens to be the captain of Derbyshire Falcons. He can bat well, which we saw in the last season. But, the T20 intent was missing. Wayne Madsen is a good batsman, but he is inconsistent. Matt Critchley was a disappointment as well. Talking about the bowling unit, Michael Cohen is the only pacer who can get some breakthroughs.

 

Central Group

Gloucestershire

Yet to win a title, but Gloucestershire looked close to it when they reached the semi-finals after winning 7 matches out of 10. In other words, T20 Blast 2020 was successful for Gloucestershire because the team finished at the top in Central Group. Only a strong team like Surrey could have defeated this team and it happened.

The Gloucestershire might not look excellent when we look at their last performance. But, with batsmen like Michael Klinger and bowlers like David Payne, they can bounce back very well. But for that, we have to wait.

Northampton Steelbacks

Winner of two titles in 2013 and 2016, the Steelback was an average performer in 2020. The team reached the quarter-finals and finished at the second spot in the last season. They faced Gloucestershire in the quarters and were easily beaten.

We can understand that they have lost Kieron Pollard and Faheem Ashraf. However, Paul Stirling is a nice pick because he is performing well. If the team management lets him play in the top order, then we can expect some better performances. 

Birmingham Bears

The Bears won the T20 Blast title in 2014, but the last season was nothing less than a disappointment. The team was unable to reach even the quarter-finals. However, they can bounce back due to some attractive batting by Sam Hain.

Somerset

We cannot call Somerset successful in T20 Blast 2020 because they were unable to reach even the quarter-finals. The team won only 4 matches out of 10 and finished at 4th position. Still, we can expect something better in the upcoming seasons because they have some of the notable players.

Lewis Gregory is performing well when we talk about the bowling unit. In terms of batting, Tom Banton can stay on the pitch for long. Roelof van der Merwe is there to hit some big ones. He can also take wickets whenever required. So, let’s expect better from Somerset in the upcoming season.

Glamorgan

Finishing at the 5th spot, Glamorgan would like to overlook last year’s performance. We cannot forget that they reached the semifinals in 2017, but nothing sort of that is happening since then. They have David Lloyd and Colin Ingram. Hence, there are chances that the team can score big. But, the bowling unit is still a concern.

Worcestershire Rapids

Performed well in the T20 2019, the Rapids reached the finals in 2019. But, 2020 was not for them because they finished last in their group. We can say that Moeen Ali was not available. But, one person cannot make the difference. Can he?

 

South Group

Surrey: Runner-up

Winner of T20 Blast 2003, Surrey enjoyed the last seasons as well. They reached the final after crushing Gloucestershire in the semifinals but were overshadowed by the Outlaws later. Even after losing the last season, this team will be one of the favorites again in 2021.

Hashim Amla, Jason Roy, and Tom Curran are the key players of this team. Amla and Roy are already in form as we saw in the last season. Sam Curran can add to the power because he is a fabulous all-rounder who has done well in all the formats.

Sussex Sharks

Winners of T20 Blast 2009, the Sharks had a decent last season because they finished at the 2nd position. The team reached the quarter-finals but got defeated by 45 runs. Luke Wright played well in all the group matches but was unable to make an impact in the only quarter-finals. Let’s see if they can improve in the upcoming season.

Kent Spitfires

Another winner of T20 Blast 2007, Kent Spitfires started the last season with a blast. They cruised to quarterfinals, but saw a defeat from Surrey and finished at the 3rd position. The team won 5 out of 10 matches.

The Spitfires have Joe Denly who scored some crucial runs in 2020. Sam Billings is also there, but he needs to be more consistent. But, Daniel Bell-Drummond is the real hitter here. The young cricketer is living up to our expectations. If he gets some support from other batsmen, then we can expect some better results in the upcoming tournament.

Middlesex

After managing to win only 3 matches out of 10, Middlesex finished at the 4th position. The team was unable to reach the quarter-finals and it’s the reason why they would like to forget T20 Blast 2020. Do you know the reason? Their top-order is not all broken now.

Paul Stirling performed in a great way and helped Middlesex to win a couple of games. Steven Finn supported well. But, the problem is with their batting. Dawid Malan and Eoin Morgan can fire, but we are yet to see some action from them. Let’s see what they can do in the upcoming season.

Essex Eagles

The T20 Blast 2020 wasn’t good for the Eagles because they finished on the 5th spot. Simon Harmer is leading the team since Ravi Bopara left. Harmer is performing well with the bowl, but he was unable to take the team anywhere. You can bet on Harmer for taking wickets, but give him a pass when it comes to winning matches.

Hampshire

You will not believe us after watching the T20 Blast 2020, but Hampshire has already won this tournament twice; once in 2010 and then in 2012. But, they finished at the last spot in 2020.

The team has high-quality players like Liam Dawson and James Vince, but none of them are performing. Let’s hope they can turn things around in the upcoming season.
